Concordia International School in Shanghai offers University classes in conjunction with Concordia University, Nebraska

Concordia Dual Credit, Student Applications

To be eligible to take these classes students must have completed 2 semesters of university level calculus – AP Calculus BC or the equivalent course from an accredited university (with US accreditation).

The two semester classes currently being offered are Calculus III  and Linear Algebra. Click on the heading above to find out more information about these classes

This course is offered in conjunction with Concordia University in Portland. Students are enrolled as students in that University and receive credit for two one semester courses detailed below.  Students completing these courses have the opportunity to complete a minor in mathematics from that university if they complete other course work. Please see the drop down menus to see the requirements.

Semester 1 Calculus III

This course is designed to take the concepts that students have already learned in Calculus I and II and expand these into three dimensions. Topics explored will include three dimensional graphing, partial derivatives, exrema of functions with 2 independent variables, double and triple integrals. All topics include applications in Engineering, physics and other discipline areas. A graphing calculator is required and will be used for 3 dimensional graphing and modeling data

Students will also utilize three dimensional software on a computer which is provided.

Students will be graded on the following criteria:

Midterm One: 25%
Mideterm Two: 25%
Final Exam 30%
Homework 20%
(Note: quizzes are part of the homework grade as they are a measure of how well students understand the homework)

Semester 2  Linear Algebra with Differential Equations

This course is designed to introduce students to introductory topics of linear algebra. Topics explored will include linear systems, linear transformations, orthonormal bases, the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process, least squares curve fitting procedures, eigenvalues, eigenvectors and differential equations. A graphing calculator is required and will be used to perform matrix operations and create mathematical models from data. Students will also frequently use computers and provided software through out the course.

Academic Honesty

Students are encouraged to help each other on problems in the homework when they get stuck. However, students are not allowed to copy assignments from another student and turn it in as their own. The best way to help with out copying it help with showing the other student their assignment. Any use of unauthorized electronic devices during a test is considered academic dishonesty.

It is important to note that this class follows all of the policies regarding academic dishonesty for both Concordia University in Portland and Korea International School. Students involved in academic dishonesty will likely not be able to obtain university credit for this class.
