AP Statistics

Course Description

This course provides an elementary introduction to probability and statistics with applications. Topics include: basic probability models; combinatorics; random variables; discrete and continuous probability distributions; statistical estimation and testing; confidence intervals; and an introduction to linear regression. Technical writing is a a major theme in the course especially as it pertains to experiment design and reading and interpreting research and making comparison between data sets.

Students in this class will take the AP Statistics exam. This course is equivalent to one semester university level course.

AP Statistics

Teacher – Mr. Whitehead

In this class, you can expect them to,

  • Become more proficient at solving problems,
  • Integrate statistics across disciplines,
  • Communicate using technical writing to explain and justify conclusions from datas
  • Develop proficiency in using their graphing calculators (a TI 83, or 89  are strongly recommended) to confirm and simplify algebraic algorithms, and
  • Apply statistics to practical, meaningful, and real-world uses.
  • All students in this class will take the AP Statistics exam in May

We will be balancing skills, properties, practical uses and representations (models) throughout the course.  Activities and projects allow them to work individually and cooperatively in exploration and creative problem solving, with opportunities to dialog and report findings. We plan to focus on the following units throughout the year,

First semester: Exploring data, modeling distributions of data, describing relationships, designing studies, probability, random variables

Second Semester: estimating with confidence, testing a claim, comparing two populations or groups, inference for distributions of categorical data, regression

A word on the following,

Homework/class work.  The homework is checked daily.  I expect the homework to be completed and ready to check at the beginning of the next class.  One day late homework will incur a 40% reduction.

Stewards of texts and calculator – The textbooks used are by Starnes, Yates and Moore , published by Freeman. Should they lose either, they are responsible for replacing them. The TI Nspire calculator is recommended for the course.

Help outside of class. Homework from every class session. Students should have ample time to ask questions in class. Students who need more help can meet me during club time or after school.

Academic Honesty – Students are encouraged to help each other on problems in the homework when they get stuck. However, students are not allowed to copy assignments from another student and turn it in as their own.If a student is found to be copying another students paper both the student copying and the student whose paper is being copied will receive zero and the incident will be reported to the administration. The best way to help with out copying it help with showing the other student their assignment. Any use of unauthorized electronic devices during a test or quiz is considered to be academic dishonesty.

Grading – Homework and participation 20%, Tests, quizzes and projects 80%
The final exam will be worth 20% of the semester grade.

I’m looking forward to our year together.

Mr. Whitehead
